The Hidden Cost of Clothes That Don’t Fit

You know the feeling. You open your closet and you have plenty of clothes – technically – but somehow, nothing to wear. That blazer is a touch too oversized, the trousers an inch too long,  and more pieces than you’re comfortable admitting have been hanging in your closet, unworn for months.

It’s a common problem, and the predictable result of buying clothes that fit the mannequin and not you

Clothing Waste: The Numbers

The average American discards roughly 80 pounds of clothing per year. Studies find that the majority of what we own doesn’t even get worn: around 82 percent of clothes in the average American’s closet aren’t worn in the previous 12 months, and The average garment is now worn roughly seven to ten times before disposal.

That sounds to us like a closet full of wasted money.

At the same time, producing a single new t-shirt requires approximately 2,700 liters of water. A pair of jeans, up to 9,000 liters. The fashion industry as a whole is responsible for roughly 10 percent of global carbon emissions in 2026.

Cost-Per-Wear

There’s a straightforward formula that reframes how you think about clothing value:

Cost per wear = (Purchase price + Alterations) ÷ Number of wears

A $200 garment that fits beautifully after a $100 alteration, worn 20 times, costs $15 per wear.

The same garment that doesn’t quite fit and gets worn twice costs $100 per wear.

The Mental Load of Having Excess Clothing

Beyond the math, there’s the cost of a closet that just doesn’t work. Getting dressed is harder when half your options come with an asterisk.

The inverse is also true: when your clothes fit well, getting dressed becomes easier, faster, and genuinely more enjoyable. You reach for things with confidence. You stop buying replacements for pieces that just needed a small fix.

We’ve had clients bring in pieces they’d been avoiding for months, sometimes years. After one fitting, they leave asking why they waited. That’s what well-fitted clothing does: it turns something you own into something you’ll love to wear.
