Stretch Fabric and Activewear Alterations

You found your dream leggings. They fit almost perfectly, and now you're wondering whether a tailor can alter them. The short answer is: usually, yes. However, activewear alterations require an entirely different set of tools, techniques, and expertise than regular clothing, and not every tailor has them.

You found your dream leggings. They fit almost perfectly, and now you’re wondering whether a tailor can alter them. The short answer is: usually, yes. However, activewear alterations require an entirely different set of tools, techniques, and expertise than regular clothing, and not every tailor has them.

Here’s what you should know before you bring anything in.

The Core Problem With Stretch Fabric

Most clothing is woven using structured, stable fabric. Activewear is technically a type of knit! This means it stretches in every direction.

A standard straight stitch applied to a knit fabric will simply snap the moment the fabric moves. To sew stretch material correctly, a tailor needs a stitch that moves with it: a zigzag, a triple-zigzag, a twin-needle stretch stitch, or a true coverstitch machine.

They also need the right needle. A regular sharp needle slices through lycra fibers, leaving micro-damage that can run or unravel over time. The correct choice is a ballpoint or stretch needle, which pushes the fibers aside rather than cutting them. Thread matters too; polyester thread has the elasticity to move with the fabric. Cotton thread doesn’t, and it will pop.

What is a Coverstitch?

If you’ve ever looked at the hem of a good pair of leggings and noticed two parallel rows of stitch on the outside with a clean, overlocked finish underneath  that’s a coverstitch. It’s a specialized machine that creates a flat, flexible, professional hem that won’t tunnel, pucker, or crack under stretch.

Sleeve shortening (athletic tops)

Bonded or welded seams

When is it Worth it to Alter Activewear?

If you spent real money on a set – like Lululemon, Alo, Vuori, Sweaty Betty – and it fits well in every way except length or waist, altering it makes clear financial sense. The cost of a professional hem is a small fraction of what you paid for the leggings. Where things get more complicated is with premium pieces that use bonded seams (meaning the seams are heat-fused). Those can’t be replicated by a tailor. We’ll let you know at your consultation if that’s the case.

At Alts, we assess every piece individually and tell you exactly what’s achievable, with an honest conversation about what we can do for your activewear.
